ANDREW SMITH BADMINTON
ANDREW SMITH BADMINTON · HIGH PERFORMANCE JUNIOR COACHING · CALGARY
Individual coaching for ambitious junior badminton players who are serious about improving, competing and reaching their potential. Built around long-term athlete development rather than occasional private lessons.
THE APPROACH
High-level badminton development requires more than simply attending additional training sessions. Every player has different strengths, weaknesses, habits and competitive needs.
My coaching is built around the individual athlete — identifying what is limiting their performance and creating a clear development focus to help them progress.
I work with a small number of competitive junior players so that coaching remains highly individualised.
ABOUT ANDREW
I have spent much of my life competing and coaching badminton at elite level. My playing career included representing Great Britain at the Olympic Games and reaching a world ranking of No. 11.
Since finishing my playing career, I have worked as a national coach and coached many top international players at both junior and senior level.
I now bring that experience to junior athletes in Calgary who are serious about competitive badminton.
“The objective is not simply to make players better technically. It is to help them become better badminton players, better competitors and perform at a higher level in competition.”
HIGH PERFORMANCE COACHING
Stroke quality, movement, footwork, consistency, attacking skills, defensive skills and overall efficiency on court.
Patterns of play, shot selection, positioning, opponent weaknesses and how to construct rallies more effectively.
Match preparation, tactical planning, routines, decision-making and post-match analysis that connects training to competition.
Clear priorities based around the individual athlete rather than a generic private-lesson programme.
WHO I WORK WITH
Regularly compete in tournaments
Want to progress through provincial and national competition
Train consistently and are committed to improving
Want more individual attention than group training can provide
Have clear competitive goals and are prepared to work long-term
This programme is not primarily aimed at beginner or recreational players. Athlete numbers are deliberately limited.
HOW IT WORKS
Parents share the player's current level, competition experience and goals.
We assess the player's technical and competitive needs and whether the coaching is a good fit.
We identify the areas likely to have the biggest impact on performance.
Most athletes work consistently on a weekly basis rather than booking isolated sessions.
Training is connected back to match performance and tournament demands.
INDIVIDUAL COACHING
Regular weekly coaching is recommended for players who want to make meaningful long-term progress.
1-to-1 coaching
Monthly coaching
TOURNAMENT COACHING
For selected athletes, tournament coaching may also be available. This connects the work done in training directly to competition.
